What is the role of the kubelet in a Kubernetes cluster? How does it interact with the control plane?

Sample answer

The kubelet is an agent running on each worker node. It receives Pod specifications from the API server, ensures containers are running in those pods, reports node and pod status back to the control plane, and manages pod lifecycle including health checks. It's the bridge between the Kubernetes control plane and container runtime.

Why this matters

Understanding kubelet is essential for troubleshooting node-level issues. When pods fail to start or behave unexpectedly, kubelet logs often reveal the root cause. The kubelet also handles resource limits, volume mounting, and liveness/readiness probes.

Code examples

Kubelet troubleshooting

bash

# Check kubelet status
systemctl status kubelet

# View kubelet logs
journalctl -u kubelet -f

# Check node conditions
kubectl describe node <node-name>

# View kubelet configuration
kubectl proxy & curl localhost:8001/api/v1/nodes/<node>/proxy/configz

Kubelet configuration

yaml

# /var/lib/kubelet/config.yaml example
apiVersion: kubelet.config.k8s.io/v1beta1
kind: KubeletConfiguration
containerRuntimeEndpoint: unix:///var/run/containerd/containerd.sock
maxPods: 110
evictionHard:
  memory.available: 100Mi
  nodefs.available: 10%
  imagefs.available: 15%

Common mistakes to avoid

Not checking kubelet logs when pods fail to start
Misconfiguring eviction thresholds leading to unexpected pod evictions
Forgetting that kubelet needs container runtime (containerd/cri-o) to be running

Likely follow-ups

What happens when the kubelet loses connection to the API server?
How does the kubelet determine if a pod is healthy?
What is the difference between kubelet and kube-proxy?

CVE-2026-80521: The Ubuntu Container Escape Is Not Just an Ubuntu Problem

A public exploit breaks out of default Docker and Kubernetes containers through a bug in the AF_UNIX garbage collector, and Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 still have no kernel fix. The same code sits in the 6.1 and 6.6 LTS kernels, where upstream has no fix either. Here is how to check any node in one command, and what to do while you wait for a patch.
